With its rugged coastline and immense inland river systems, New South Wales has an extraordinary maritime heritage. The State boasts some 1800 historic shipwrecks, from a World War One battlecruiser, HMAS Australia (1910-1924), a Japanese Type A Midget Submarine, M24 (1942), Scottish clipper ships, to colonial trading vessels, steamships and harbour craft. The remains of ports, shipyards, coastal defences and other maritime infrastructure sites, add to the colourful archaeological record of our past.

Maritime Heritage Online allows you to search this rich history through interactive maps, a searchable database, photographs, videos, archaeological reports and activity guides.
