Those who used and built the fish traps were skilled in engineering (dry stone walls), river hydrology and fish biology.
The fish traps remain a fragile reminder of a way of life that helped form the landscape.
Fish traps are found in many forms, but can include a complex arrangement of stone walls several hundred of meters in length. They are commonly built in shallow water areas of tidal lakes and rivers.
