Fish Traps

Fish traps are important to Aboriginal communities. They have strong spiritual, symbolic and other cultural associations.

Those who used and built the fish traps were skilled in engineering (dry stone walls), river hydrology and fish biology.

The fish traps remain a fragile reminder of a way of life that helped form the landscape.

Fish traps are found in many forms, but can include a complex arrangement of stone walls several hundred of meters in length. They are commonly built in shallow water areas of tidal lakes and rivers.
