HMAS Australia, the former flagship of the Royal Australian Navy, was sunk 24 miles outside Sydney Heads, due east, on Saturday 12 April 1924. The water depth was stated as 150 fathoms (275 metres of water). The vessel was sunk by demolition charges and deliberate flooding and turned completely over before sinking in twenty-one minutes. In attendance were HMAS Brisbane, HMAS ANZAC, and HMS Dehli, the light cruisers HMS Danae, Dauntless and Dragon. HMAS Australia was an Indefatigable Class Battle Cruiser that arrived from the UK on 4 October 1913, built by John Brown & Co, Scotland. The vessel was launched on 25 October 1911. Armed with eight 12-inch guns, the Australia had a displacement of 18, 500 tons, 900 crew and speed of 25 knots and distinguished career during World War One.
